Despite the freezing temperatures Acomb ladies welcomed Canalside Terriers to a chilly Energise. With a previous defeat to the terriers earlier in the season the tangerines were ready for a second round and started the first half strong. Several attacks on terriers goal saw only the one being capitalised – a hit into the D from right midfield Sally Fairweather came to Kerry Woods who’s shot found a terriers foot but with advantage being player Wendy Watson sprung onto the ball with a super strike to find a very loud backboard! Canalside kept playing plenty of balls straight through the middle utilising their very skilful midfield player which meant tangerine midfielder Georgi Wood had to do a lot of marking. The second half saw the youthful legs of Vicky Wrigley on the left driving a sideline ball toward goal from the 25, a backline pass returned from Leona Thorpe saw Wrigley drive further into the D passed not one, not two but three of terriers defence and with a little lift and a strong strike to the right the keeper was outstretched making it 2-0 to the home side. Canalside never stopped attacking but solid defensive work came throughout the whole game from goalkeeper Stephanie Barker who stopped numerous short corners and shots on goal making her deservingly Acomb’s Player of the Match.
Acomb’s Men’s 2 played host to top of Division 5 men’s Bingley Bees 1 in a reverse of the first fixture of the current campaign which saw a heavy 10-0 defeat. The match started with the tangerines having good possession which was rewarded after a great shot from Jamie Robinson was followed in the 20th minute by Harry Ellis open the scoring. Bingley Bee’s were awarded a short corner and good saves from Acombs keeper Martin Grainge stopped them levelling the score on two occasions. However despite Acomb having the advantage the visitors equalised shortly before half time. Acomb came out the stronger side after the turn round but mid way Bingley Bees took the lead only for Robinson to level the scoreline at 2-2 with 5 minutes left. Acomb’s man of the match went to John Armitage.
The tangerine’s men’s 1st XI fixture at Lindum, formerly Lincoln, was called off at 11am due to a frozen surface.
